mikecavanaughphotography > Road to Polihale Beach, 2008

This road leads to the end of the west coast of the United States. Polihale is a state beach but notice the sign marker indicating where to go. The marker is a paper plate on a metal pole. The dirt road is about 4-5 miles long and was grated well so driving on the road wasn't as pothole infested as previous reports. However, once the beach of Polihale is reached the road becomes sand and will require heads up awareness for driving to avoid getting stuck in deep sand. Getting stuck out here is not fun and there's no AAA to call let along a cell signal to call for help. Unfortunately I was not smart enough and got stuck in deep sand less than 20 yards from hard pan near one of the last beach parking lots. Getting stuck resulted in 20 minutes worth of digging the front tires out (numerous times which failed and failed and got the front tires buried deep in sand up to the front bumper). Finally we were able to get enough rocks and the cars floor mats under the front tires, plus lowered the tire pressure, put the car in low gear, and by constantly turning the steering wheel left and right the front tires finally got enough traction freeing us from our sand trap. Burnt the heck out of the cars floor mats too which resulted in comments from my little girl from the back seat "I smell something burning!!"

So if driving the Polihale, going from dirt to sand, don't stop or slow down in the sand.
